Asa brings us ‘Beautiful Imperfection’

Bukola Elemide better known as ASA (Pronounced Asha) ‘falcon’ in Yoruba is a Nigerian singer songwriter. I must stress an exceptional songwriter who’s writing style often reminds me of India Arie.

Asa was born in Paris and spent just over 2 years before relocating back to Lagos, Nigeria with her family. She retuned to Paris later to study music and that was the origin of the beautiful music we are blessed to hear from her.

Asa blends afro, folk, soul and reggae and is often compared to Tracy Chapman (not just because of the dread locks) with a touch of Sade. I also read somewhere that she has been likened to Nigerian-German Singer Ayo. Asa’s Sultry tone can be described as warm husky meets silky smooth. She has opened for Beyonce Knowles, John Legend and Femi kuti to name a few.

Signed to Naïve Records, her début album was released in 2007 entitled ‘Asha’. The first single was ‘Fire on the Mountain’ which is a personal favourite of mine. The album also included the single Jailer and other notable tracks such as Bibanke, Eye Adaba and So Beautiful. This is a must have album if you do not already own it.

So 3 years on and Asa is back with a sophomore album ‘Beautiful Imperfection’ which sounds even better than her début (and trust me her debut was definitely 4 stars) so you get the picture.

In Asa’s own words “The first album reflected my state of mind then…I had a lot to talk about – social and political issues. This time, I felt different: I wanted to create something that would help people come out of sad moods and feel uplifted.”

The album is available digitally but will be officially released in the UK, USA, Canada and Australia in 2011. The lead single off the album entitled “be my man” was released in late September and you can watch the video below:

The album’s lyrical content is ‘on point’ and although some of the songs are in Yoruba, the music keeps you engaged. Some of my favourite tracks thus far include ‘Bamidele’, ‘Be my man’, ‘Bimpe’, ‘Questions’ and ‘Baby gone’. The track that I have set on repeat is ‘Bamidele’. In the words of my friend Mutsa (www.meetmutsa.tumblr.com) “I don’t even have to know what she’s saying. This song is enchanting”. Please listen below to some tracks from hew new album ‘Beautiful Imperfection’ and her debut release ‘Asha’:

Asa will also be playing in London, UK on April 4th 2011 at the Barbican with Tiken Jah Fakoly to double-bill. That will be an exciting concert that I cannot miss.

Bringing together the best of Western and African sounds and blending her Yoruba tongue with English, Asa continues create quality positive music. Jools Holland you need to get her on the show.

Please support her music folks and check out her official site, Facebook, MySpace and Twitter.
